I think that thise quote is a fact, because when you really stop caring about thing that in a way are very important to you, you're like dying slowly and alone. I say alne, because if you stop caring the others can't help you (the one you love or the ones that loves you), because you're closing the doors to them. Also we stop of doing things, like realizing our goals and draems, and little by little start to decay in the rutine and be bored of everything, so you lose interest in what surrounds you.
